SLIDE CONTENTS
  1. Tropical Spiderwort Management in Corn with Lay-By Herbicides 2005 Eric P. Prostko and Tim Flanders The University of Georgia
  2. Tropical spiderwort (a.k.a. Benghal dayflower) Commelina benghalensis tropical Africa native annual or perennial seeds and rhizomes above and below ground flowers 1,600 seeds/plant alternate host of southern root-knot nematode Reservoir for southern stem blight (white mold) #31 in World’s Worst Weeds (Holm’s)
  3. TSW in Georgia * confirmed in 29 counties by GA Dept. of Ag and UGA in 2004 (blue) * identified in 4 more counties in 2005 (black)
  4. TSW in Field Corn
  5. Materials and Methods Grady County Small plot techniques 13 treatments POST – Aim, Evik, Gramoxone Residual – Dual, Atrazine, Axiom 4 replications PD – May 4 (DK67-60RR) AD – May 25 Directed or lay-by type Corn = 22” tall Spiderwort = 3” tall 20/ft2 Hand-harvested yield data
  6. Results
  7. Tropical Spiderwort Control in Field Corn - 05 Untreated (166 bu/A) Aim 2EC @ 1.5 ozs/A Dual Magnum 7.62EC @ 1.33 pt/A Herbimax @ 1% v/v (168 bu/A) 34 DAT $24/A treatment cost (excluding application)
  8. Tropical Spiderwort Control in Field Corn - 05 Untreated (166 bu/A) Evik 80DF @ 2 lbs/A Dual Magnum 7.62EC @ 1.33 pt/A Herbimax @ 1% v/v (177 Bu/A) $29/A (excluding application) 34 DAT
  9. Tropical Spiderwort Control in Field Corn – 05’ Untreated (166 bu/A) Gramoxone Max 3SC @ 16 oz/A Dual Magnum 7.62EC @ 1.33 pt/A Herbimax @ 1% v/v (171 bu/A) $22/A (excluding application) 34 DAT
  10. Summary Addition of residual herbicides to POST herbicides improved control of TSW. Atrazine and Axiom provided less residual control of TSW than Dual Magnum. Aim, Evik, or Gramoxone tank-mixtures with Dual Magnum provided the best control. However, corn yields were not improved enough to justify cost of treatments.
